Last night B and I ordered in from our favorite neighborhood sushi spot and while I was chowing down on my chopped toro (I’d put it up against any dish, anywhere) he says, “Can you believe it’s been a whole ten days since we’ve had Sakura Hana?” B’s always got jokes. We laughed, but then I woke up this morning thinking about the same vow I make every year: to try new restaurants.

I have a confession to make. I ripped this recipe out of a magazine while getting my nails done last week. I am 31 and I am my mother. Though I’m not even sure if Helen pulls these kinds of … Continue reading

wise words from my new friend felicia
Felicia likes to say you’re either on her bus, or not on her bus. So this past Saturday afternoon we were sitting in a rather dimly lit corner of Buvette in the West Village when she wanted to take photos of our (insanely delicious) food in natural light. She asked the waitress if we could switch to the open table beneath the window. When the waitress said no (it was being reserved — though we never saw anyone sit there in the two plus hours we were there) Felicia literally took matters into her hands. As each dish came out, she picked ’em up one by one, and brought it to the well-lit table to photograph in the light streaming through the window. People may have looked at her funny, but she didn’t care.

As soon as the snow started falling last Friday night I was dreaming about the beach. Fine, the food at the beach — Rockaway Taco to be exact — and their famous salad served in a ziploc bag. It is so simple … Continue reading
