food bloggers against hunger

How far could you stretch $4 at the supermarket? I’m about to find out because on April 8th, I’ll be posting a recipe (or two, or more? — depending how savvy my supermarket strategy is) when I join the Food Bloggers Against Hunger challenge.

Why $4? That’s how much money food stamp participants are allocated per day.

If you have any thoughts or advice — what I should buy, what I should make — I’d love to hear, so please leave me a comment below.

And for more information on this challenge or A Place at the Table (the documentary that inspired it), check out The Giving Table.

  1. The best thing on that type of budget is a stir fry. Since veggies usually are priced per pound, you can stretch your dollar the furthest. Also, since the vegetables have natural juices, you don’t need a sauce if it doesn’t fit the budget.

  2. A can of black beans, a can of tomatoes, a can of corn drained, taco seasoning, 1/2 cup or so of water and you have Mexican Chili and it’s less than the $4.00! It’s really good with some sour cream or some shredded cheese if you have some on hand.
